8:1 coordinate converter

Nether Portal Calculator

Convert Minecraft Overworld coordinates to Nether coordinates—or convert Nether coordinates back to the Overworld.

Convert coordinates

Nether X
Y
Destination Z
Nearest-block coordinates (X, Y, Z)
The calculator preserves Y for planning. Actual safe portal placement can vary because of terrain, obstructions, and existing portals.

How the Overworld to Nether calculator works

Minecraft uses an 8:1 horizontal coordinate scale between the Overworld and the Nether. Divide the Overworld X and Z values by 8 to estimate the matching Nether location. Multiply Nether X and Z values by 8 to convert back to the Overworld.

Overworld → Nether: X ÷ 8 and Z ÷ 8
Nether → Overworld: X × 8 and Z × 8

Example conversion

An Overworld portal at X 1,200 and Z −640 converts to approximately X 150 and Z −80 in the Nether. Building close to those converted coordinates helps create predictable portal pairs.

Why convert portal coordinates?

Accurate conversions make it easier to connect distant bases, build Nether highways, and create organized portal networks. One block traveled in the Nether represents eight horizontal blocks in the Overworld, so Nether routes can dramatically shorten long journeys.

Nether Portal Calculator FAQ

Does this work in Java and Bedrock Edition?

Yes. The basic 8:1 horizontal coordinate relationship works in both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

Should I divide the Y coordinate by eight?

No. Only X and Z use the 8:1 conversion. The calculator preserves Y as a planning reference, but safe portal height depends on terrain and available space.

Why did my portals link incorrectly?

Minecraft searches for nearby existing portals and valid placement areas. Portals that are close together, obstructed, or slightly misaligned may connect differently than expected.

Can negative coordinates be converted?

Yes. Negative X and Z values use the same division or multiplication. Signed coordinate fields use a mobile keyboard that includes the minus character.
